What is Buccal Fat Removal surgery?
The Buccal Fat is located deep in the cheeks. Patient’s who have large buccal fat pads have a rounded appearance to the face and lose the definition of their cheek bones. By removing this fat in the cheeks, we can slim the appearance of the face from the cheek bones down to the chin resulting in what’s known as a “heart-shaped appearance” to the face. Some people lose cheek fullness as they age, others will never lose this and surgery may be a good option.

Buccal Fat Pad Removal is a simple procedure that can be done in the office or in the operating room. It involves small intraoral (inside the mouth) incisions which directly exposes the buccal fat. This is carefully and gently removed and the incisions are closed with absorbable sutures. Because this is done through the mouth, there are no external incisions or scars. With this fat removed, it creates a depression underneath the cheek bones that is desirable for achieving a slimmer face.
Buccal Fat Removal procedure is a quick procedure and when done awake in the office has a very quick recovery time. The results are noticeable immediately after surgery before minor swelling begins. The cheeks will gently swell over 1-2 weeks and maximal results will be seen in 2-3 weeks after surgery. The incisions inside the mouth heal quickly and there is only minor discomfort.
Aside from Buccal Fat Removal further facial slimming can be achieved with Botox injections in the masseter muscles. This is commonly done for people who have large masseters which are located on the sides of their jaw bones. This muscle is involved in chewing and can become large and noticeable in some patients.
