What is chin augmentation surgery?
When discussing the lower third of the face, the jawline and chin are two very important structures that provide balance and symmetry to the face. When there is an imbalance, it can negatively enhance other structures including the nose and neck. This is also why a chin implant is frequently combined with other procedures including rhinoplasty and neck liposuction or a neck lift. Sometimes a subtle augmentation of the chin/jawline can make a dramatic difference and put the entire face in harmony.
Am I a Candidate for a chin implant?
Selecting the right patient for chin implant surgery is a very important part of the consultation process. Common reasons for performing a chin implant include: small/recessed chins, jaw asymmetries, and patients seeking a stronger or more defined chin/jawline. Using 3D photography and morphing software Dr. Lozada can demonstrate the effects of chin augmentation directly with the patient.
Is chin implant surgery painful?
Chin Implant Surgery is not very painful and patients typically take very little pain medication after surgery. In the immediate post-operative period it is common to have some swelling in the area of the chin for 1-2 weeks after surgery.
The First 24 to 48 Hours After Your Surgery
You are encouraged to take it easy for the first week after surgery. You will be given a light compressive chin strap dressing in the operating room and will wear it for the first 24hrs. After this, you are encouraged to wear it throughout the next week as much as possible.
Chin implant Faqs
Chin augmentation can be achieved using temporary injectables including Restylane, Radiesse, and Juvaderm. These products are placed deep on the bone to provide augmentation similar to a chin implant surgery. The results are immediate and can last up to one year.
We use a synthetic silicone implant that is placed directly over the bone to provide augmentation and definition. A small incision is made underneath the chin inside a natural crease that effectively hides the scar. The tight layer over the bone, called periosteum, is elevated with special elevators. The chin implant is then placed into this pocket and held in place by the periosteum. The incision is closed with permanent sutures.
It is very common to have a chin implant be part of a combined surgery, especially rhinoplasty. Creating balance between the nose and chin really allows for the most natural and beautiful results for patient. A chin implant can also be done during neck liposuction or a neck lift.
